2013 Top 30 Chart

So after spending 72 hours listening to records and whittling them down from the initial stack of 200+ I now have my favourite 30 of the year.

It's not been easy, there have been casualties, but the ones left in this list are, for me, some of the best and most memorable records that came out in 2013. Click on the link below for the chart.

Dig Deep with Chris Da Mentalist (Edit / Jaegerossa) # 2 281113

Chris Da Mentalist, one half of Jaegerossa, will be joining me for this Thursday's Dig Deep On Preston FM for the second time.

With launch of  The Edit with Phil Rose & Chris Da Mentalist Radio Show, the Edit at The Imperial and Baku Lounge events that have had CJ Mackintosh, Graeme Park and Grant Nelson as headliners, and with remixes in the bag for the likes of Lenny Fontana, Lisa Millet on Musol, and Dave RedSoul's Playmore label, 2013 has been a busy year for the Preston based DJ / Producer / Presenter.

During the first hour Chris will be telling us more about what he has been up to, airing a couple of his own productions and chatting about the forthcoming events he is involved with featuring Joey Negro, Greg Wilson and K-Klass.

Around 9pm Chris will be taking over the decks for an hour long mini-mix featuring some Hacienda classics, a Jaegerossa edit or two and some newish tracks from this year.

Dig Deep on Cowbell Radio #7 with Boogie Nite (Lumberjacks In Hell / Glenview Records Inc)

On November's show on Cowbell Radio I'm made up to be able to bring you another exclusive mix from Chicago based DJ and Producer Boogie Nite.

We aired Boogie Nite's first Dig Deep mix back in December 2012 and was blown away with his selections of pure discofunk killers.  Little did we know at the time that the man was working away in the studio producing his own edits of those rare and sought after gems.

Less than two years later Boogie Nite has had a series of excellent releases on two of the world's hottest record labels in 2013.  Check our review of the Chicago Service EP or follow the links below for more info.

As a warm up for the Preston based Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club event, PT will be dropping Funk & Soul classics throughout the show.  Between 8.30pm and 9pm we will be airing an exclusive preview of the forthcoming Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show LP Vol 2. 9 tracks, back to back, all selected by the man.

Part 1 of Boogie Nite's Cowbell Mix goes out at 9pm, with Part 2 going out at 10pm. That leaves us just enough time for a couple of roll calls and the Global Gig Guide between the mixes.  As usual I will line up a few more Dig Deep selections to take us through to 11pm. So another packed show then...

Dig Deep with Mikey D.O.N #4 311013

On this weeks show Mikey D.O.N. returns for his 4th appearance on the show. Mikey needs little or no introduction around these parts. To say he is a respected music head that knows a thing or two about records is an understatement.

Mikey's passion for a good tune has rained through in bucket loads every time he has been on the show and afterwards when the faders are down we often chat for a good while longer about music.

From his own club nights at Night Of The Living Dread at Band On The Wall and AWAG at Mooch, Mikey has never forgotten his hip hop roots.  Unbelievably he has never owned a pair of turntables, but when he gets behind the decks he knows how to own the crowd; be that playing reggae and dancehall, funk and soul, breaks and boogie, house and techno or 2 step and jungle.

On this week's show we are going two for two before and after Mikey's mini-mix at 9pm. We might even break out into one of his infamous soundclashes, but based on last times clash outcome I'm going into that one as the student...

Mikey D.O.N #3 is still up on Soundcloud for a limited time only.

Live Broadcast: Thursday 31th October 2013 8-10pm
Repeated: Sunday 3rd November 5-7pm

Listen online via Tune In Radio or tune to 103.2fm

Dig Deep on Cowbell Radio #6 with Danielle Moore (Crazy P)

On October's show on Cowbell Radio I'm truly honoured to Dig Deep with the UK's first lady of disco come house Danielle Moore from Crazy P.

As well as being a fantastic vocalist in a great band from Manchester that's been doing it for years, she is one hell of a DJ!!

A regular face on the scene, Danielle needs little introduction and throughout her career she has played at clubs and festivals all over the world.

Crazy P are due to release MTS Volume 2 on Future Boogie records on October 28th.

Dig Deep with the Boogizm crew #4 171013

On this Thursday's Dig Deep on Preston FM I am excited to be joined by special guests Tom Boogizm and Chris Feinmann, and Papa Stan from Mooch.

Stan is leading the charge in Preston against the anti-underground and gives us an overview of what is and has been happening in the city's newest music venue.

It's Tom's 4th appearance on the show. If you caught any of the previous shows with the Boogizm crew you will know that Tom has a huge love of music which includes everything from jazz to 2 step, afro to boogie, hip hop to beatdown house music, dub to latin and most things in between. He has an awesome record collection, knows how to put them together, was at the front of the queue when they were giving out character and then sneaked back in for 2nds.

Tom is one of the ring leaders at the North West UK's up and coming underground club night, Boogizm, and recently supported Owiny Sigoma Band when they played in Manchester.

In contrast, it's Chris's 1st visit to the show.  As well as being heavily involved in Boogizm with Tom, Chris is resident at Manchester club night Development alongside Mike O'Mara and Tom Lynch aka Tomson.

The list of excellent and big guests that the Development the lads had on over the years is quite long but it includes Rahaan, DJ Spinna, Dixon, Metro Area and 6th Borough Project.  The Development Music record label that ran alongside the night kept the pedigree benchmark high on their releases.

Dig Deep Recommends: Pete Hebert & Dicky Trisco - Disco Brothers (Disco Deviance)

For their 30th release Disco Deviance are back with another essential 12" from Pete Herbert and Dicky Trisco.

For me it's all about the B side track 'Disco Brothers' which stretches out one of my all time favourte boogie/disco basslines into a chugging groove to die for. Treating the original track ‘Under The Skin' by The Brothers with total respect.

In The Disco Last Night on the A Side is the the kind of loopy builder that our man Watson is getting a reputation for delivering. I've not managed to spot the original track yet. It's a female vocalist with the lyrics "I went dancing at the disco last night, I saw this guy, i think i saw the light". 15 Trainspotting points if you can name it.

Currently available at Juno Records and all decent record shops.

Friday 11 October 2013

Dig Deep Recommends: Alexander Robotnik vs JAN - Problemes D'Amour (NDATL Muzik)

This Special Edition one sided 12" was released at the Deep Detroit DEMF after party on 29th May 2011 at 1515 Broadway to celebrate the official release of Part 3 in the Music Institute 20th anniversary series.

Limited to 300 vinyl pressings, this multi-coloured marble effect vinyl 12" (mine is purple) features an exclusive JAN retouch/KZR re-edit that is a must have for lovers of deep pulsing house music.

At 8:03 the JAN retouch is nearly twice as long as the 4:40 Kenny Dixon Jr mix that came out as Part 3 of  3 of the Music Institute 20th Anniversary Series.

Aside from the length, the differences between the two versions are quite subtle. The JAN retouch/KZR edit seems to stretch out and strip things back to the groove a bit.  There's more use of that tremendous bassline, less of the guitar and some extra work on the drums. All of which make this mix that bit more club focused and my favourite version of the two.

Currently available again at Juno Records as part of the wave of NDATL 12"s that have come to the surface over the last couple of months.

On tonight's Dig Deep we are honoured to welcome Mikey D.O.N. into the studio for the 3rd time.

Fresh from his recent sets in Preston at Mooch events Viva Vinyl and the launch of his own Anything With A Groove night, you can expect a freestyle mash up of hip hop, funk, soul, boogie, disco, house, techno, broken beat, reggae and everything in between as we dig in the crates of all that is good.

Dig Deep on Cowbell #5 with Marcel Vogel Aka Em Vee (Lumber Jacks In Hell / Intimate Friends)

For the 5th Dig Deep on Cowbell Radio we continue with our series of exclusive sets from the best DJs around the world.

Hot on the heels of John Morales, Boo Williams, Diesler and Fraser, for September's show I'm truly honoured to have Amsterdam based DJ and Producer Marcel Vogel aka Em Vee in the mix.

Marcel's exclusive mix for Dig Deep on Cowbell Radio cuts across disco, boogie, house and afro and proves why he is up there with the most in demand DJs out there.

As head honcho at Lumberjacks in Hell he's just released the massive Chicago Service EP featuring tracks from Rahaan Rah, Boogie Nite, DJ Cratebug, Jamie 3:26 and Mr Gene Hunt.

The Lumberjacks sister label, Intimate Friends, is due to release some proper twisted deepness from  NYAK in the vein of Theo Parrish on September 30th. The first 500 copies come with limited and beautiful screen printed cover.

Thursday 19 September 2013

Dig Deep with Dave Prentice 190913 (Infektus)

On this week's show we are pleased to welcome some local Preston based talent into the studio.

Dave Prentice is a DJ and Producer with a vast taste for most forms of music. When Djing the vibe is usually both deep and dark be it Nu-Disco, House or Techno.

Dave has been collecting music for at least 20 years and started producing in the mid nineties with the use of old analogue synths, groove-boxes and drum machines.

He bought his first set of CDJs at the turn of the new century (having caught the bug of mixing some 5 years earlier from his good friend Darren Lucas aka Keyfun) before eventually going on to purchase his first set of Technics vinyl turntables 10 years later.

Clearly the original pioneers from Detroit have heavily influenced Dave's style, as have his close friends Darren Lucas aka Keyfun and Paul Cottam aka Cottam.

The Contact EP on the Spanish techno label Infektus is on the horizon with a release date very soon. Expect a taster during the show.

We will be getting to know a bit more about Dave in the first hour whilst PT digs deep in the house and techno boxes. At 9pm Dave takes over on the decks for an hour long DJ set of all things deep and dark.

We can't wait to hear what this learned gentleman of the underground dance world will pull out of the bag when we let him loose on the Dig Deep turntables.

Dig Deep Recommends: Chicago Service EP (LumberJacks In Hell)

For the 10th release on the excellent Amsterdam based Lumberjacks In Hell imprint, label owner Marcel Vogel aka Em Vee has asked 6 of Chicago's finest bumping house and pitched down disco producers to contribute some of their finest reworks for this double 12".

With early support from Eddie C, Euan Fryer, Cottam, Frank Booker, Jimmy The Twin and Lady Blacktronica, the sought after vinyl finally gets released on 9th September 2013...

Make Me Hot by Rahaan is an infectious groove that fans of The Revenge and 78 Edits cuts will go mad for.

Dig Deep with DJ Izrail (Chicago / Tradition) #5 050913

On this week's show we welcome back head of the Chicago Dig Deep Family and Tradition resident DJ Izrail Dizko.

Respected selector and all round DJ booth wrecker, Izrail has dropped another jacking one hour long set that would rip the roof off any discerning house loving club.

The exclusive mix represents the true underground sound of the Windy city as Izrail roots through his collection and plays from the heart.  Full of his now trademark vibes, but this time on an old school tip, he has dedicated this 5th Dig Deep mix to our friends at Lets go back in Glasgow.

Crafting his turntable skills since 1985, at the age of 15 DJ Izrail was opening parties for Dave D'Master Merritt & Vinny Divine in various Chicago based clubs.  Part of the house scene ever since, he's recently played alongside Roy Davis jr, Paul Johnson and Rahaan to name a few.

Currently a resident at Tradition, Izrail is putting on some great looking nights and is back behind the decks this Friday 7th September at the Underground Wonder Bar in Chicago.  The line up also features house veteran Glenn Underground, Boogie Nite and legendary vocalist Curtis Harman aka Cei Bei.  Check the event on Facebook for more info.

After that Tradition presents the 'Message In Our Music' night on 5th October featuring special guests Craig Alexander and Lady D.  Keep an eye on this guy, there's much more to come...

Dig Deep with Dave D'Master Merritt (No Name) #3 230813

On this week's show we are honoured to welcome back legendary producer and DJ Dave D'Master Merritt for his 3rd Dig Deep mix.

Dave has been producing tracks since the late 80s, and his group 'No Name' was at the forefront of house from the off.  If you are not already in the know, a quick gander at the write up for the show back in July 2012 featuring Dave's first mix will give you a crash course in the gems he has worked on to date.

Dave has put together an exclusive birthday mix for us to celebrate his special day.  As is tradition now from the Chicago Dig Deep Family DJs, the mix is a mash up of many styles that reflect the true 'House' sound of the Windy City.

Trainspotters, tapers, house veterans and disco divas be ready, this mix is special.

August 24th is Dave's Official Birthday Party, taking place at The Checkerboard Lounge in Chicago.  Dave will be spinning along side Al 'Hot Mix' Holmes, Derek Jones, Bruce Ivery and head of the Chicago Dig Deep Family and close friend DJ Izrail.

Dig Deep on Cowbell #4 with Boo Williams (Strictly Jaz Unit)

The 3rd Saturday of the month sees the return of Dig Deep on Cowbell Radio for another 3 hour throwdown of all that's right in the world of music.

Our first 3 guests on Cowbell (Diesler, Fraser and John Morales) set the bar high... for #4 I am honoured to have Boo Williams back on the show with his 2nd mix.

As a producer Boo is up there with the original leaders on the Chicago scene. He's time served and has been part of the city's house music entourage since 1981.

A quick look at his profile on Discogs gives a feel for this guys prolific output - Boo has been dropping Chi-Town bombs since 1994 on record labels such as Relief, DJ-Upbeats, Moods and Grooves and Guidance to name just a few. With a raft of aliases and connections such as SJU Muzik / Strictly Jaz Unit, Boo is still very much an active producer.

In 2012 just one of his highlights was the Moving Rivers 12" excellent Rush Hour label. In 2013 things have stepped up a gear again; his Crying Black Man 12" flew off the shelves in June and the Cosmic Teck 12" is currently doing the rounds.

Thursday 8 August 2013

Dig Deep with Voc Walters #2 (Chicago) 080813

On this week's show we bring you another exclusive one hour set from Chicago based DJ and all round nice guy Voc Walters.  It's Voc's 2nd mix for the show and it's a non stop dance off!!

Voc does big room house music in the way that many attempt but few perfect. His relentless sets come soaked in disco music's sweet vocals and basslines whilst morphing together soulful garage and the darker but funky sound of chicago.

Voc first started spinning records at the age of 12. Growing up on the south side of Chicago provided him with many influences such as the Hot Mix 5, Pharris Thomas, Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles, Lil Louis & Steve Hurley.

Voc made a few appearances on the big stage early on. Those appearances included the Ascot Hotel and The Hyde Park Racketball Club in Chicago, and a guest appearance on WKKC Chicago in the 80's. These appearances were along side the likes of Mr. Gene Hunt, Tyree Cooper, Pharris Thomas and Lloyd Dev just to name a few...

Dig Deep with Boo Williams (SJU Muzic / Strictly Jaz Unit) Re-run 250713

Tonight I am re-running the show featuring none other than Boo Williams. Originally broadcast last year, it the one with that ace summer vibed mix from one of Chicago's finest.

A brand new mix from Boo has just landed and I hope to be airing that soon on my new show on Dig Deep On Cowbell Radio...

As a producer Boo is up there with the original leaders on the Chicago scene. He's time served and has been part of the city's house music entourage since 1981.

Dig Deep with K'Alexi Shelby (K Klassik / Transmat) Re-run 110713

On this week’s we re-run the first Dig Deep to feature legendary Chicago house and techno producer / DJ K Alexi Shelby, better known as K'Alexi aka El Chocalata, in the mix for 1 hour. Originally broadcast back in December 2012, K's mix shows us all how it should be done and will leave you in no doubt as to why he is regarded as one of the top DJs on the planet.

Cream Of The Crop - July 2013 Chart

Afrobeat is the flavour of the month & fans should head straight for numbers 1,2,6,7 & 14.

On the disco tip, both sides of the PPF single went down well at the Beat-Herder festival. Michael Boothman's What You Won't Do For Love is pure quality, Mike Huckaby's Love Filter is a blast from the past and Marvin & Guy Shot Me is worth checking.

House heads check Arto Mwambe and DJ Spider for some freshness, Linkwood delivers 2 great remixes & don't miss those represses of Theo and Ben Pearce. Charles Bradley, The Charmels & QASB all kill it on the funk soul front. And the Soul Jazz comp of Caribbean Jump Up Mambo is essential.... Click on the link below for the full chart.

Dig Deep with Paul Lynch #1 (International DJ) 130613

This show features born and bred Wigan based record collector and international DJ Paul Lynch.  I first met Paul in Preston at Boogizm, and after sharing a bit of a mad car journey home from another Boogizm in Manchester, an appearance on the show was inevitable.

Paul L takes to the decks around an hour in to drop some top notch and treasured soul, funk and boogie 7"s in the mini-mix.

Vinyl picking aside, we'll get chance to chat to Paul about his roots, influences, record collection and the places he has played at across the world.

Dig Deep on Cowbell Radio # 3 with John Morales (NYC) & Nick Street (Bommynite)

On this month's Cowbell Radio double header, we are truly honored to be joined by two all round selectors from the land of disco, boogie and soulful house.

We have world renowned Producer and DJ John Morales live in the mini-mix - it's a Cowbell exclusive recorded  in Dubai last month.

Plus DJ and promoter Nick Street will be dropping by to play 5 of his favourite records, as well as having a chat about what he's been up to over the last few months - no doubt he will have some tales of his globe trotting capers supporting the man.

John Morales
If you don't know who John Morales is, let's just say as a producer he has worked with some of the all time greats; Jocelyn Brown, First Choice, Inner Life, Teddy Pendergrass, Candi Staton, Loletta Holloway, Skyy, Universal Robot Band, War, The Fatback Band, Salsoul Orchestra, Logg & Brass Construction.

John has been DJing since the 70s; in the early days he played at the Stardust Ballroom (where a young Jellybean Benitez had worked) and Studio 54.  After a break from djing, John returned to the scene in true style doing the Paradise Garage Tour, Southport Weekender and Horse & Groom, whilst not forgetting a little club night in Preston called Itch vs Phreak.  John's reputation as a true legend of the disco scene is cemented with each set. More information.

"In music, and especially in underground music, the word 'legend' is thrown around to the point where it loses all meaning. What is a legend? It's someone who broke the mold - someone whose sounds, techniques - even his style - changed things forever. It's a pioneer that everyone who followed after emulated, whether consciously or not. In dance music, the person you're talking about is John Morales". 5chicago.com

Nick Street
Nick Street aka Nick The Greek is one of those guys that just gets on with it (the same is easily said about John Morales).  Nick clearly loves his music and he has amassed an immense knowledge of disco and soulful house through the records he has been collecting for 20+ years.  But digging deeper into his music career unveils a CV that most would be very proud of.

Nick cut his teeth promoting and DJing at events in the North West. Back in 2004 he was putting on parties with the likes of Jesse Saunders. 2006 highlights include Andy Ash. In 2007 line ups included Jerome Derradji (Still Music), Aim, Broke N English, Jon K, Konny Kon & Kwasi. In 2008 and 2009 he introduced Liverpool to Domu and DJ Romain (Brooklyn). And that's just to name drop a few.

Fast forward to 2013 and Nick's Bommynite Music Management company represents John Morales, Andy Compton (Rurals), German Afrobeat outfit Pax Nicholas And The Nettey Family and Blakkat (Shaboom).

Nick is also a keen journalist and has worked for the BBC many times over the years as well as interviewing Al Kent for Djoon.com.

So here we are set for another 3 hour session between 7 and 10pm blasting out worldwide on Cowbell Radio; PT's at the controls and he will be digging in the crates of funk, soul, jazz, hip hop, latin, brazilian, afrobeat, down tempo grooves, disco, boogie, deep house, broken beat, techno and everything in between.

Dig Deep on Cowbell Radio # 2 with Fraser (Trailer Trash / Vinyl Miners)

This coming Saturday evening I'm back at Cowbell Radio with special guest DJ Fraser aka Fraser Funk (Trailer Trash / Vinyl Miners / Bamboleo) in the mini-mix.

An all round record guru, what Fraser doesn't know about music isn't worth knowing and he has rustled up one of his exclusive killer sets for us.

I'll have a wedge of my favourite tracks from the crates of funk hip hop brazilian disco reggae soul afrobeat boogie deep house and techno.

In the studio I'll be joined by a fellow Cowbell presenter, John Tree (The Perfumed Garden), who will be digging in his playlist to give us a flavour of his show.

Around 9.30pm I'll play The Listeners Choice - this month it's A Tribe Called Quest special. You can vote for your fave Tribe classic on the Dig Deep on Cowbell Radio Facebook page.

Dig Deep with K Alexi Shelby #2 (K Klassik / Transmat / DJ International) 160513

We are truly honored to post this podcast featuring Chicago House Legend K'Alexi Shelby in the mix for one hour dropping exclusives back to back!

It's K's 2nd time on the Dig Deep Radio Show and he is easily one of our all time favourite DJ's to come out of Chicago. To say K is prolific is an understatement and we are always in awe of his past and current output. This guy IS house and his sets epitomize the real sound of house music. A true inspiration.

Kicking things off is our man PT with a pile of new vinyl - tracks include a new summer anthem from Watson and that Stripped and Chewed bomb from Chris Grant aka Simba!

Check the post here for K's first appearance for a raft of information on the man.

Dig Deep on Cowbell Radio # 1 with Diesler (Tru Thoughts / Freestyle)

Dig Deep makes it Cowbell Radio debut this Saturday with very special guest Diesler (Tru Thoughts / Freestyle / Buried Treasure) in the mini-mix.

Diesler first guested on the show back in 2006, and it's a real honour to air this mix that the talented dj and producer has put together exclusively for the show.

Plus I'll be having a chat to Mark 'Chinny' Davis about the forthcoming 'Alfresco' presents Mr Scruff event as well as playing a wedge of my favourites tracks.

Diesler’s first release was ‘Cotton Wool’, part of Tru Thoughts’ Shapes One compilation released in 1999 and he has been working tirelessly on the music scene ever since.  With production credits attributed to the Diesler Live Experience featuring Diesler feat. Katie Miller, Laura Vane and The Vipertones and Hannah Williams and The Taste Makers, it's fair to say this guy is down with the funk...

Dig Deep on Cowbell Radio

I'm excited to announce the new monthly Dig Deep programme on Cowbell Radio will be broadcast live on the 3rd Saturday of the month.

Expect the usual unusual selections as we dig in the crates of the past to the future. Each month I'll be digging in the crates of funk, soul, jazz, hip hop, latin, brazilian, afrobeat, down tempo grooves, disco, boogie, deep house, broken beat, techno and everything in between.

There will be regular visitors to the studio, each show features an exclusive playlist and a top notch guest DJ in the mini mix. Plus we do a little gig guide for the month ahead.

Dig Deep with Mikey D.O.N #2 040413

On this show we are proud as to welcome back Mikey D.O.N. into the studio for the 2nd time.

Mikey aka Microphone D.O.N, key player in the original Chorley based crew Krispy aka Krispy 3, and a formidable DJ in his own right has amassed a superb record collection full of rare and sought after gems.

With more appearances at clubs and festivals across the UK than we can list here, Mikey is ever in demand as people want to experience one of the North West's chief selectas in action.

Mikey's 'Night Of The Living Dread' night has been filling the Band On The Wall in Manchester for time. The night that promises Dub to Dancehall, Roots Rockers to Ragga via Lovers Rock went monthly as of March 2013.

Mikey's 1st appearance on the Dig Deep Radio Show was back in October 2011 when he challenged PT to a 1 on 1 soundclash... and won!  So this time we are going to let the man with more records than most loose on the decks for a 45 minute mini-mix....

Dig Deep with Paul Thornton & Chris Holt Live at The Beat-Herder 210213

On this week's show we take you back to the 2012 Beat-Herder Festival with and hour of Paul Thornton & Chris Holt (Four Corners) live in the Trailer Trash Lounge.

Recorded on the Sunday night, we've split the two hour set in half and you can catch the 2nd half on Chris's Four Corners Show on Thursday 28th February 2013 or listen to it in full on Mixcloud.

Over the last couple of years Paul Thornton and Chris Holt  have built a reputation as Preston’s finest eclectic DJ tag team.  Both obsessive record collectors, their sets come rooted in the past whilst giving a nod to the future, effortlessly joining the dots between funk, soul, hip hop, jazz, afrobeat, reggae, latin, broken beat, house and techno.

Seasoned club and festival regulars, Thornton and Holt supported Craig Charles at his Funk and Soul Club back in March 2012 and impressed the crowds, not to mention the man himself, so much that they were asked back in a featured slot at the December.

Paul & Chris will be playing again at Beat-Herder Festival in July 2013.

Live Show: Thursday 21st February 2013
Preston 103.2 FM
8-10pm
