Mr Scruff - Keep It Unreal - Preston - 6th July 2017

This Thursday evening Ninja Tune's finest Mr Scruff brings his Keep It Unreal night to Preston's LiVe Venue.

As a DJ, Mr. Scruff plays across the board, flitting between soul, funk, hip hop, jazz, reggae, latin, african, ska, disco, house, funk, breaks, soundtracks and loads more. As a producer he makes music that draws on these influences, with a large dose of cheek and good humour. His cartoon drawings illustrate gig flyers, record sleeves and CD covers, and usually accompany him at gigs as live animated visuals.

When we look back at clubbing history in years to come, it's safe to say now that Mr Scruff will be heralded as one the most inspirational DJs of our generation. In terms of standards he's up there with the likes of Ron Hardy, Larry Levan, David Mancuso, Francis Grasso, Frankie Knuckles etc.

We have featured Mr Scruff live in the mix at The Big Chill and Beat-Herder a few times now via the Dig Deep on Preston FM show, however it's not that often we have this calibre of DJ play live on our door steps - we know there are more than a few people buzzing about this.

Doors open at 7pm and Mr Scruff is doing a 4 hour set. The venue are putting in extra sound and Mr Scruff will have his trademark visuals in effect. Check out his site for more:

Our own Paul Thornton is on warm up duties, and there is no doubt he'll be digging extra hard this week in preparation for what could well be the highlight in Preston's summer clubbing calendar.

Darryl's Manchester based Ghetto Child club night is a celebration of all that’s good about disco, funk, soul and soulful house music. With a huge nod to the golden era of the 70’s and 80’s, whilst not forgetting the more contemporary incarnations of the soulful sound; just one year in, recent masters of the game to play at the club include Al Kent, Rahaan, The Mighty Zaf, Derrick Carter, and Norman Jay.

Dig Deep Mix Series - #6 Shaun Funkyginger Foran (Regrooved)

We continue the Dig Deep Mix Series with an exclusive mix from crate digger Shaun 'Funkyginger' Foran. Shaun knows a thing or two about sought after 45s from funk and soul music's rich history. His musical knowledge is the kind that can only be gained through years of experience routing through dusty shelves, and his trusted box of 7"s is home to both classic breaks and little heard gems.

Ever keen to share his love for the music, Shaun has played at the likes of Beatherder, Solfest, The Vintage Festival, North Lancs Soul Festival, and Reboot at Night and Day in Manchester. Shaun is co-host of Regrooved which takes place at The Golden Lion in Lancaster which takes place on the last Saturday of every month.

Dig Deep Mix Series - #5 John Tree (The Perfumed Garden)

We continue the Dig Deep Mix Series with an exclusive mix from DJ, percussionist, and occasional producer, John Tree. One of the chief weeders in The Perfumed Garden at The Beat-Herder Festival, John has been involved since the early days of 2007.

Each year The Perfumed Garden's perfectly formed dome plays host to some of the best acts and packs in the revelers until sunrise. Both big names and hand picked up'n comers rub shoulders throughout the weekend, and the vibe that is created is a testament to John and his cohorts programming skills.

Over the year's John has been a guest many times on the Dig Deep Radio Show. His eclectic mixes always come in from the leftfield and introduce me to something new. This time John picks through brazilian jazz, deep house, techno and electronica via indie dance and nu disco. Never one to conform to the norm, this is possibly the freshest mix up you'll hear all year.
